Anthropic chatbot Claude now available in Europe

Anthropic, the AI company in which Amazon and Google have invested billions, has made its core product, Claude, available in Europe.

Claude was already available in other countries, but our region had to wait longer. It is not unusual for generative AI solutions to launch later in Europe due to concerns and legislation from the European Union. “We’ve designed Claude with a strong commitment to accuracy, security, and privacy,” said Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.

The EU passed the AI Act earlier this year to regulate the technology. The regulations, among other things, examine AI’s risk, which can be categorized as low, medium, high, or unacceptable.

Anthropic is one of the new gems of big tech companies. It is seen as a strong competitor to OpenAI, in which Microsoft has invested heavily. Amazon announced an investment of $4 billion (€3.7 billion) in Anthropic as recently as the end of March, while Google announced last year it was putting up to $2 billion into the AI company.

Move to Europe

Coming to Europe will allow Claude to expand its user base further. In addition to English, the chatbot supports French, German, Spanish, and Italian. From a question to Claude himself, we understood that the Dutch language is not yet officially supported.

Claude is available through the browser and an iOS app. It can be accessed for free. However, a Claude Pro version is available, giving users access to all models (including Claude 3 Opus). The Pro version costs €18 per month, excluding value-added tax (VAT). There is also a Team subscription of €28 per month, with a minimum of five participants.
