Update, Laura Herijgers, 1/03, 10:50 am: Windows 11 22H2 will continue to receive all updates. Microsoft previously reported that this version of Windows 11 would only receive security updates after February 2024.
Microsoft indicates that it will provide Windows 11 22H2 with all updates for a much longer period of time. The new end date is June 24, 2025. However, the new end date only applies to the following editions: Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise and Enterprise multi-session. For the other version, the date was extended to June 26, 2024. This end date applies to the following editions: Home, Pro, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations.
Original, Floris Hulshoff Pol, 21/01, 11:50 am: Microsoft recently announced that PCs with the outdated Windows 11 21H2 and 22H2 versions will be forced to update the latest Windows 11 23H2 version. This is done to get users out of end-of-life versions.
Microsoft says it is implementing a forced update to get all users out of old Windows 11 versions that have already reached the end of service life or will do so soon. Windows 11 21H2 is already end-of-life, and 22H2 will reach that status this October.
In the November 20 23 Patch Tuesday update, Microsoft also announced that users with a Windows 11 22H2 version will no longer receive so-called non-security preview updates starting from the end of February. This means that users with this version will receive only security updates, which will also stop in October 2024.
ML for rollout
For the rollout process of this forced update, the tech giant is using a continuously trained ML model. This should make the entire rollout process run safely in stages.
A manual update to Windows 11 23H2 is also still possible for Windows 11 Home and Pro users. This is possible through the Windows Update option which can be found in the Settings menu.
